The Seagate edition (Seagate DiscWizard) CAN be installed on a system without a Seagate or Maxtor drive but such a drive will be required for launching the application. What I can say for sure is that once the WD edition actually launches it works like the regular (paid) version - one can work with any drive (not just Western Digital ones).

I do have two Western Digital drives but they are internal and I really couldn't be bothered to install the WD edition of Acronis True Image, disconnect both drives and try if the application would run. I highly doubt that a drive is only needed for the installation, but I cannot say that with 100% certainty as I haven't tested it. I used it for imaging my C: drive for quick recovery. Will often require a checkdisk if the system was on a not very healthy hdd. Only good for cloning Windows systems, forget about Mac, QNAP, Linux. Now I've used Acronis way in the past when it still worked. I love Acronis, it has saved me a great amount of time but Im also aware of its limitations: - Like almost every program other than ddrescue, it simply doesnt work on very damaged hard drives. This tool allows the users to replicate a PC's OS, software, patches, and drives all together. Stay the hell away from Acronis True Image This might represent common knowledge for the more advanced users here (most of you are using linux anyways), but I feel like I need to share my experience here. To clone hard drive in Windows 11 or Windows 10, free software like Acronis True Image will be a good choice.
I can't be 100% certain whether after the installation launching the program would also require a Western Digital hard drive but it's only logical that it does. Acronis True Image Western Digital edition WD Software. One needs a Western Digital hard drive in order to begin the installation. I have used the WD edition and can speak from first hand experience.
